Driver Standing Near Truck Hit, Killed After Woman Veers Out Of Lane, Orange Police Say

A 45-year-old tractor-trailer driver was killed while standing near his truck after an elderly driver veered out of her lane and struck the man, Orange Police said.

The incident took place around 3:14 p.m., Monday, March 25, on the westbound side of Derby Avenue just before Sodom Lane in the Town of Orange, said the Orange Police Department.

An investigation into the crash, which is still ongoing, found that a vehicle driven by a 79-year-old woman was traveling westbound on Derby Avenue when it drifted off the right side of the roadway for an unknown reason and struck the man who was standing near the rear of his flatbed tractor-trailer, said the Orange Police.

The vehicle also struck the rear of the trailer and then careened into another vehicle traveling on Derby Avenue, police said.

The tractor-trailer had been parked off the right shoulder of the roadway after delivering a large piece of construction equipment to the area. 

The truck driver was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he died from his injuries. His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification of his family, Orange Police said.

The vehicle driver was also transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital with unspecified injuries. The operator of the third vehicle was not injured. 

The westbound side of Derby Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours.
